Three species of grouse!

   by Rachel Krohn

Did you know Lake of the Woods has three species of grouse?  The most common is the ruffed grouse.  However, many hunters also like targeting the spruce grouse and the sharp tailed grouse as well.

Spruce grouse are found in wooded areas and prefer the pines.  Sharp tailed grouse prefer the agriculture areas of Lake of the Woods and roam freely.

Some hunters make it a goal on their trip to go after all three, calling it a trifecta!

The area is home to thousands of acres of public land that visitors are welcomed to hunt.  This is a huge advantage for many as more populated areas do not have these advantages.  For more info on grouse hunting or maps to hunting the area, go to www.LakeoftheWoodsMN.com.
