8/8/2015 Lake Minnetonka, MN.

Tom Davis, NPAA #729 and Nick Cox, NPAA #395, won the Lake Minnetonka Walleye division
during a very tough bite.  Davis said, that they were the only team to bring walleyes to the
scales during one of the toughest bites he has ever seen.  He stated that, this time of year can
always be tough on most bodies of water due to all of the bait fish and this particular body of
water is full of bait from 2ft down to 50ft of water.  Combine that with a heavy amount of boat
traffic from water skiers to sail boats and it can really be difficult to catch walleyes during the
day on this lake.

Lake Minnetonka is located in the metro area of Minneapolis, MN.  Davis explained that, he
focused on running his Ranger 620VS along breaks using his Minn-Kota “Ulterra” auto pilot and
cruise control feature set at 1.4 mph to direct the boat while keeping an eye on his electronics
with the new Humminbird “Onix” unit using LakeMaster mapping and the depth highlight
feature.  The key was to find those good weeds with a combination of cabbage and coon tail
that were not starting to slim up from the warmer water temps and the Humminbird “Onix”
down imaging makes that allot easier.

The duo ran a combination of spinners made by Glenn Vinton NPAA #280 and Renae Vinton
NPAA #281 of “Back Water Custom Tackle” and Berkley “Gulp” crawlers and Berkley “HAVOC”
minnow style baits.  Davis said, even though some of their weed lines dropped down to over 22
feet, he really had to work hard at keeping the baits in the strike zone at the 14 foot mark on
those break lines.  The duo worked quickly between 5 different locations to sort through over
75 fish that day from bluegills, bass, crappies and pike to finally get their walleyes.  Davis said, if
you have not been using artificial baits you really should be trying the Berkley products as they
will catch every species you’ll find in the water and there is an endless amount of presentations
you can use.
