The Colorado Walleye Association wrapped up the regular season with the 4th and final point tournament of the year at Trinidad Lake in Southern Colorado. This lake always offers variety of species during the tournaments, but is well known for large catches of walleye in excess of 60 per day.

The weather at Trinidad, typical for this time of year exceeded 100 degrees for both the previous few days and during tournament days. High winds also accompanied day 2, reaching speeds of 30+ miles per hour.

Day one saw a beautiful morning for launch at 6:30 am for the 34 boat field. After a hot and mostly calm day, the team of Barry Cundiff and Eric Thorn took the early lead. Following closely behind was the team of Justin and Cody Crump at less than .6 pounds behind. Third place on Saturday went to the team of Justin and Brandon Jones, who were less than a pound out of the lead.

Day two started with a light breeze, but by 10:00 the wind had picked up dramatically. The team of Dave Kooser and Powers Cayce took top honors for the day, with the team of Justin and Cody Crump back in 2nd just .1 pounds behind. The team of Mike Latimer and Preston Vines were less than .3 pounds behind and sitting in 3rd.

This was a very hard fought and tight tournament with almost every team in the running right up until the end. An elusive big fish was all that would have made the difference in taking 1st. The top 20 teams were separated by less than 2 pounds total! Over the course of 2 days there was a possibility of 340 walleye being brought to the weigh station. The great anglers of the CWA didn’t let us down as 337 walleye were brought in. Only 2 teams failed to weigh their limit over the 2 days.
We also ran a special award for our final tournament. A prize package valued at over $1500 went to the team that brought in the SMALLEST 10 fish limit to the weigh station. The CWA teams only knew of a special offering, but did not know the specifics until the rules meeting on Friday night. The team of Gary and Grace Mongelli brought in an amazing 10 fish limit of 7.10 pounds, a fantastic .71 average. Congratulations to the winners (or losers) for this accomplishment. We would like to thank all our supporting partners for making this award possible including St. Croix rods, Maui Jim, Reefunner, Northland Fishing Tackle, MinnKota, Eagle Claw, the Colorado Avalanche hockey organization and many others. This year would not be possible without the support of the great organizations and many others.

For our next tournament the top 30 teams from the CWA are off to the 5 state regional championships at Lake McConaughy Nebraska on July 16th and 17th where we will be competing against some of the best sticks around. We will have 30 teams representing Nebraska, Wyoming and Kansas, along with 10 teams coming up from Texas.
