The Colorado Walleye Association wrapped up its 3rd points tournament of the year this past weekend June 11th and 12th at “Big Mac”, Lake McConaughy in Nebraska. Big Mac is known for big walleye and big winds and neither let the CWA down. An incredibly windy Saturday with 25-30 mph wind left 18 of the 33 boats entered in the tournament putting a goose-egg on the board.

The local Nebraska team of Rowland/Rowland took the early day one lead with a two fish bag weighing an impressive 14.44 pounds, including big fish of the day at 7.54. Following closely behind was the team of White/White with a 5 fish limit of 13.65 pounds, and in 3rd place was the team of Thibodeau/Eigsti with 3 walleye weighing in at 13.32 pounds. Only one team of the 33 brought in their limit.

Day two brought calm winds to start the morning and the fishing improved dramatically with 9 limits coming to the weigh station. Once again the team of Rowland/Rowland stepped up to the plate with an excellent weight of 21.04 pounds to take first. This was in part to 2 very nice fish weighed in right off the bat at almost 13 pounds.  The team of Cunning/Hannon also weighed in a 5 fish limit totaling 14.52 pounds to take 2nd on day two, followed by the team of Latimer/Vines barely missing the 2nd spot with a 4 fish bag of 14.41 pounds. Big fish for the day went to the team of Walker/Walker with a monster ‘eye weighing in at 10.52 pounds.

Winning weight for the tournament went to the team of Rowland/Rowland with 35.48 pounds.

The winning techniques were a variety of cranks, and dragging crawlers behind bottom bouncers, but pitching spinner baits along the damn proved to be efficient. The alewife spawn went into full swing the day before the tournament, and the big walleye were in the chasing mood.

Next up is the final point’s tournament of the year before our 130 team regionals.  June 25th and 26th we will be heading down to Trinidad Reservoir in Southern Colorado, where 50 fish days are not uncommon.
