On June 6-8 ten Boy Scout (CAI) Certified Angling Instructors from Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri met at Des Plaines Council Scout Adventure Camp in Rochelle, IL to train 14 new CAIs and hold a fishing and fly fishing merit badge clinic for over 60 Boy Scouts.

Bill Myers, NPAA member #361 and CAI #1007 taught Leave No Trace (LNT) ethics and Clean, Drain and Dry.  Bill Pepito, member of the Boy Scout National Fishing Committee, and Steve Klubertanz, Area 7 Boy Scout Fishing Advocate, helped instruct fly casting.

Besides conservation aspects of fishing, scouts were taught fishing knots, learned fly tying and tied 3 flies, received instruction and practiced fly casting, and had a chance to put their new skills to use in the camp lake.  Lunch was trout in aluminum foil that they had cleaned and gutted themselves.

NPAA provided 20 rod and reel set that were given to lucky scouts that drew a number at registration.  Wildlife Forever provided “Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers” key floats that were give as “prizes” for correct answers during the LNT session.

Thank you to those who donated time and equipment.

FISH ON!
