To cure that spring fishing fever, no one has to worry themselves with a long trip to Northern Minnesota to catch a Muskie, the greatest fresh water trophy fish in North America. One of the best kept secrets in the St. Louis area is only a short two hours away. Lake Kinkaid, in Southern Illinois, is one of the top muskie fisheries in the United States. A local fishing club, Shawnee Muskie Hunters, is sponsoring their annual Spring Muskie Tournament on Saturday May 3rd and Sunday May 4th at Lake Kinkaid in Murphysboro, Illinois. The entry fee is $150 per boat (two persons per boat). There will be $2500 in cash prizes based on 50 teams entered. Fishing is from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3 and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 4. This price includes dinner and banquet Saturday evening with many attendance prices. All tournament information and registration forms are available on the clubs website www.shawneemuskiehunters.org.May fishing is post-spawn for the muskie in Lake Kinkaid. The water temperature will be in the mid 60’s. This time of year concentrating on the mouths of natural creek channels and the back of coves when the sun is high is best. Moderate speed casting of white spinner baits and shad color crank baits is very popular in the spring.
