March Ice Fishing in Full

Gear!

Resorts and Fish Houses are

Available!

Fish houses out until March 31, walleye season open until April 14, pike season does not close. Walleyes spread out this week. Over mud, try 22-24 or 27-30 feet of water. Use spoon tipped with frozen shiner head in jigging hole, bright colored jigs tipped with live shiners or fatheads as dead stick. Afternoon best bite, with short flurries of action common all day. Good reports from the reefs of Knight and Bridges Island, 29-31 feet. Electronics helpful. Lots of small walleyes and saugers in the mix.  Some fish making their way to south shore, staging for spawning run up Rainy River.  Good evening bite in shallower water. Tulibees are plentiful. Check with resorts as some are no longer allowing wheeled houses on their roads. Tip-up fishing for pike best 10-12 feet of water baited with live sucker minnow.

On the Rainy River, walleyes are moving up river. Fishing still consistent near airport and Wabonica Church (chapel) using pink, gold, and red/white with frozen shiner. Evening bite best. Try 16-19 feet. Rapids near Birchdale starting to open, open water on Big Fork River.

Up on the NW Angle, fishing remains steady. Try 22-24 feet with pink, chartreuse, or glow jigs tipped with live or frozen shiner. Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike active. Crappie fishing good reports for mobile anglers just over border.  For lodging info, www.LakeoftheWoodsMN.com/lodging.

Executive Director Joe Henry has the honor of holding one of Lake of the Woods big walleyes in a picture taken by AGLOW outdoor writer and photographer, Doug Stamm (www.stammphoto.com).  The fish was caught on a charter boat this past summer pulling crankbaits.  This is a nice reminder of the great open water fast approaching.  Many resorts offer full service charter fishing in which everything is provided.  Click Here for more info.

Please

Keep It Clean

The Lake of the Woods “Keep It Clean” program is in it’s second year.  A joint effort amongst a variety of caring stakeholders around Lake of the Woods created a vehicle to educate, promote, enforce and provide dumpster services to visitors of the Walleye Capital.

We ask your cooperation at the end of March as fish houses are being removed from the ice to do your part.  Please pick up and remove your own garbage and if you see other garbage not yours, please pick it up and dispose of it in one of the many land dumpsters provided.

With one of the greatest natural resources in the world, we owe it to ourselves and future generations to Keep It Clean.  Click Here for more info on Keep It Clean.

Spring Fishing on the Rainy

 River Approaching

Water open near Big Fork River.

Current open water report on the Rainy River…Open water approximately 22 miles away from Birchdale access.  Water flow from the dam in I-Falls has increased and ice is slowly deteriorating.

Spring fishing for walleyes goes until April 14th.  Annually, there is a tradition for many to make their way to the cold waters of the Rainy River as it opens up and target walleyes making their way to their spawning areas.

The draw is the potential for thousands of walleyes to be constricted into a small river, the chance at catching big walleyes and of course for many, the first open water fishing for many months.

We ask anglers who make the journey to do their part with garbage, parking, and simply working together.  Access points can be limited as there is only open water around a couple of boat access points initially.  With anxious anglers and a lot of boats and trailers, we ask as always, to help each other out and to be respectful of local land owners properties, right of ways, etc.

Walleye Season at The

 Walleye Capital

 Open till April 14th!

Some of the best action of the ice season happens in March.  In the lower part of MN, the fishing season for walleyes and pike ends the end of February.  On Lake of the Woods, however, the season remains open until April 14th.  Great news and an extended season.

Resorts are allowed to keep their fish houses out through March 31st.  With over 30″ of ice and a good snow pack, chances are that we will be ice fishing to the very end.

Take advantage of fish “putting on the feed bag” and getting ready for the spawn.

Ice Fishing is OPEN on Lake

Fresh Walleye Anyone?

A tradition up at Lake of the Woods are the fish frys.  Come up and experience world class fishing “just like the good old days” and celebrate after with a great meal of fresh walleyes and sauger.

Some groups use the fish cleaning houses at the resort they are staying at to clean their catch.  Others let the guides do the cleaning.

As far as the fish fry, cook your own in your cabin or have a resort cook them for you.  Many resorts will cook up your fresh catch with all the sides we have come to love with a fish fry.   Click Here for info on Resorts at Lake of the Woods.
