On the south end… Good numbers of walleyes caught this week on Lake of the Woods. Fishing was very good. As the waters warm, walleyes are becoming more active.

Most anglers are still vertical jigging. Anchor up and jig an emerald shiner or fathead where the walleyes are living for some fun action. Bright colors like gold, glow, pink, orange, chartreuse or a combo of these colors works well.

Walleyes hanging out 15 – 28′. Although some fish were caught shallower this week, many fish slid a bit deeper.

Good reports for those drifting spinners and trolling crankbaits as well. Gold has been a good color for both crankbaits and spinner blades.

A mixed bag for walleye anglers including walleyes, sauger, pike, perch, and sturgeon.

On the Rainy River… The river has a lot of current with the dam wide open and high water levels. There were some nice walleyes caught in the river this week.

Typical spots in the main channel are still tough to fish due to high current. Finding current breaks adjacent to shorelines or the mouth of bays has been productive for those fishing the river. Once you find fish, there are normally good numbers.

Up at the NW Angle… A great multispecies week of fishing. Most anglers are targeting walleyes. As water temps reach high 40’s, walleye action has gotten hot. Great fishing this week.

Again, a jig and minnow was by far the most common method vertically jigged below the boat. Some anglers finding fish deep, over 30′. Others finding fish shallow, trolling spinners and crankbaits over 5′ – 12′ over shallow flats or sand has been productive.

Lots of big pike caught this week. Some anglers also found big crappies on the Ontario side of the lake in 30 plus feet of water.

Various ways to travel to the Angle.

1. Drive through Canada to the Angle (must be vaccinated, no covid test required)

2. LOW Passenger Service (charter boat service across the lake avoiding customs)

3. Lake Country Air.(fly from various Midwest locations to LOW and NW Angle)

4. Take your own boat. (Safety first, this is a 40 mile ride over big water)
