Fishing in general has been fair, though few anglers have been on the ice or along the steelhead creeks. Weather has been either too harsh or ice-melting mild. Still, those few anglers who have been out are catching enough to make it more than worthwhile.

A lot of water flowed down Elk Creek in the recent thaw. This cleared out ice from the stream channel. Plenty of steelhead are in the creek, including some fresh fish. Some brown trout have been caught, and suckers already have been hitting. Fishing at Walnut Creek might be slower, or this might just be the result of light fishing pressure. East Side creeks did not clear out as much as the West Side creeks, so they have been quicker to re-freeze. Good steelhead fishing has been reported at Twelve Mile Creek and Sixteen Mile Creek. The New York creeks are frozen. A few steelhead have been caught at Dunkirk Harbor, but the ice is not good now.

Ice fishing took a big hit with the recent warmer temperatures. Some ice has rebuilt enough to be fished, but caution is urged everywhere.

Presque Isle Bay ice is marginal to fair at Horseshoe Pond, Misery Bay, the head of the bay and Marina Lake. The better action has been at Misery Bay where the catch has included perch, bluegill, crappie and steelhead. Some pike and smaller perch have been caught at the head of the bay. Perch and bluegill have provided most of the catch on Marina Lake. Ice fishers using underwater cameras have reported seeing several burbot.

None have been caught, unless they’ve gone unreported.

Some days the ice has been cleared by current or wind from the area around the South Pier, making it fish-able when it is open.
