June 18, 2010 SANDUSKY, OH-Lake Erie didn’t disappoint anglers on Day One of the Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit stop on Lake Erie out of Sandusky, Ohio. The big lake’s legendary waters yielded 76 five-fish limits and it took better than a 35-pound basket just to crack the top 10.

Going into Day Two of the event, the Pennsylvania team of Conrad and Jamie Grubbs-of Roulette and Sheffield, respectively-lead the pack with 43.94 pounds, followed by Ohio anglers Mike Knippenburg of Hiram, and Ryan Buddie of Lakewood.

In all, 380 fish weighing a total of 2,244.34 pounds were brought to the scale. A harvest tournament by state law, all fish were donated to the local Amvets post in Sandusky to  benefit disabled veterans and local youth activities.

Mark Brumbaugh of Arcanum, Ohio, and Mike Gofron of Antioch, Illinois, claimed big fish with an 11.90-pound trophy, followed by a 10.98-pounder by Jerry Fox and Billy Girtman of Alger, Michigan. A total of 77 teams are competing for more than $44,000 in cash and prizes.

A great crowd watched the event-held on the shores of Lake Erie at the Shelby Street Boat Ramp. The day was capped off with a Youth & Family Fishing Clinic courtesy of the MWC and National Professional Anglers Association, with free rods, reels and tackle donated by Cabela’s, Abu Garcia and Northland Fishing Tackle.

Barring bad weather, teams will launch at 7 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 19 for the final day of competition. A built-in “blow day” allows for two full days of competition even if foul weather prevents teams from getting out Saturday.
