This past week, Certified Angler Educator Greg Karch and NPAA Member #138, hosted fishing seminars for beginner and experienced anglers.  On Friday, September 4th Greg was part of Oaklawn’s Elementary Outdoor Day which gives 5th and 6th graders activities to experience the outdoors.  This event was held at Menominee Park in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.  One hundred and sixty youth were split up into groups of forty and attended four stations which included fishing, sailing, archery and kayaking.  Greg hosted the fishing station where he presented a shorten version of his Fishing Basics seminar which educated the youth on water safety, fishing combo’s, casting, knots fishing presentations and of course the ‘Clean Drain Dry’ message.  After the seminar the youth had about twenty-five minutes to fish and utilize their newly learned skills. Greg worked with the students on casting as many of the students had never handled a fishing combo.  Greg was also busy untangling lines!!!  Each of the groups caught fish which included sheephead and perch.   The kids were so excited when they found out that some of them had won a door prize!!  Door Prizes consisted of Shakespeare fishing combo, Future Pro shirt and water bottles which were donated by the National Professional Anglers Association (NPAA).

Greg presented a seminar for the Lighthouse Anglers Fishing Club on Tuesday, September 8th at the American Legion Hall in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.  Greg started out his seminar by talking about perch fishing on Lake Winnebago.  Greg talked about the fishing equipment he uses when perch fishing and what structure he looks for, along with how perch fishing has changed of the year.  Greg, then spoke on pulling flies in the river where he showed the equipment used, how to tie inline flies, how to work the flies and how to properly troll them.  When Greg was talking about pulling flies he made the anglers aware to only use this technique if there is current in the river and that the water is not to dirty.  The final topic of the seminar was crawler harnesses.  Greg reviewed how to tie their own harnesses, Greg’s favorite bead and spinner colors, how to troll the harnesses and when to use a keel or Guppy weight.  Greg mentioned when he pulls harnesses that he uses Off Shore Boards with a tattle flags to get the baits away from the boat and to detect bites, as many times sheephead will bite the back part of the crawler.  During the seminar Greg reviewed Frabill product such as the Crawler Can which keeps night crawlers cool for day and Frabill’s aerators which will keep minnows cool and aerated for twenty-four hours on a set of D batteries.  These fine products will keep your bait fresh which is so important!!!
