Gamakatsu® Adds Versatility With The Straight Eye Octopus Hook

Tacoma, Washington (June 24, 2020) Gamakatsu’s Octopus hooks have long been revered for their combination of finesse and power, with a thin profile that disappears in baits or flies with minimal hook weight that won’t hinder action but has the backbone to stand up to powerful runs from big fish. Now Gamakatsu has increased the versatility of their Octopus hook lineup with a straight eye version, available in sizes 8 to 4/0.

The Octopus Straight Eye hook was designed for West Coast anglers targeting salmon using herring. The delicate flesh of herring is prone to rip and tear when rigged with traditional hooks, so Gamakatsu’s engineers tweaked their Octopus hook to give it an ultra-thin wire and a narrow, smooth, straight eye that slides through fragile flesh without ripping. The result is a herring with that perfect spin, ready to entice a chrome bright chinook or coho.

The relatively short shank and round bend is ideal for a number of live and cut baits. The Octopus Straight Eye hook is perfect for rigging nightcrawlers, leeches and salmon eggs in the smaller sizes. Saltwater anglers dunking clams for finicky stripers or selective cod will appreciate the ultra-thin wire that disappears into the bait. The round bend accommodates cut bait like herring, shad or smaller live baits for finesse presentations.

Fly and Tenkara anglers will find the new hook to be a useful chassis for a variety of traditional and modern designs. The addition of the straight eye Octopus hook to Gamakatsu’s lineup adds versatility to the tier’s bench. Though they are considered the gold standard fly hook for targeting stout anadromous species such as steelhead and salmon, the new straight eye Octopus hook will be invaluable for bass, carp, and saltwater fly anglers as well. Even centuries-old kebari fly designs can benefit from the new hook.

Whether you fish flies or bait, the new Octopus Straight Eye hook is a welcome addition to any tackle box. All are coated with an NS black finish for a stealthy appearance that’s corrosion-resistant for use in saltwater.

Straight Eye Octopus Hook Features:

  • Ultra-thin, yet ultra-strong hook provides finesse presentations with plenty of backbone to land large fish
  • Narrow hook eye for easy bait rigging
  • Stealthy NS black finish is corrosion resistant for use in saltwater
  • Available in sizes 8, 6, 4, 2, 1, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, and 4/0
