WELCH, Minn. (May 6, 2010) – The FLW Walleye Tour Western Division will visit the Mississippi River Pool No. 3 in Welch, Minn., May 20-22 for the first of three stops in the Western circuit. Hosted by the Treasure Island Casino and Resort, the tournament will feature as many as 300 top walleye anglers casting for top awards up to $35,000 in the Pro Division and $7,500 in the Co-angler Division.

“The ice went out early in Minnesota,” said Ted Takasaki of East Gull Lake, Minn., who won the 2009 FLW Walleye Tour Mississippi River event at Red Wing, Minn. “So I think things are happening a couple of weeks earlier than they have in the past. I’m pretty convinced that the fishing’s going to be good and the fish will be stacked up in certain tight areas. That’s usually how tournaments up in this pool have been in the past. There’s certain current-oriented areas that hold bigger fish.”

Takasaki said he believes anglers will have good results trolling lead core with crankbaits as well as slow-trolling a three-way rig tipped with live bait. Takasaki said he thinks there will be a good number of large fish crossing the weigh-in stage.

“It won’t be predominantly 4- and 5-pounders,” Takasaki said. “I think it will be 6-, 7- and 8-pounders and then 2- and 3-pounders.”

Anglers will take off from Treasure Island Resort Marina located at 5636 Sturgeon Lake Rd. in Welch at 7 each morning. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins will also be held at the marina beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday’s final weigh-in will be held at the Treasure Island Casino parking lot located at 5734 Sturgeon Lake Rd. in Welch beginning at 4 p.m.

In FLW Walleye Tour competition, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2010 FLW Walleye Tour Championship held on Leech Lake in Walker, Minn., Sept. 23-25.
