In early 2014, FM Walleyes Unlimited, INC and Courts Plus Community Fitness Center came together to create an event in the Fargo-Moorhead community that would help grow the sport of fishing through education and outreach; specifically targeting youth.  April 23rd, 2016 marked the 3rd annual youth fishing clinic that hit record attendance with 115 future anglers.

In preparation for the clinic, FM Walleyes Unlimited, INC reached out to the Future Angler Foundation (FAF) to see if they would be interested in donating equipment to help with the clinic. Without hesitation, the FAF donated fishing rod and reel combination’s as well as fishing journals for the future anglers to take home and record their fishing secrets.

The 115 future anglers reported to Studio A for an interactive seminar where they were taught how to keep their favorite waterways clear of aquatic nuisance species (ANS) by cleaning, draining and drying their gear each time they have left the water. They also learned on the water safety, how to identify different species of fish and why fishing is fun!

Following the seminar, the future anglers made their way into the gymnasium where they put their casting skills to the test catching backyard bass. They learned how to tie various fishing knots, safe handling of fish and the proper way of removing hooks. The future anglers also had the opportunity to view live minnows through an underwater camera system.

Over the past three years, 313 future anglers have attended this event with plans for many more!

NPAA Members who helped out with the event were: Spencer Deutz #552, Dave Wasness #456, Nancy Koep #323, Paul DesChene #663, JW Schroeder #148 and Scotty Brewer #665. FM Walleye’s Unlimited Members Rick Mohan and Carl Wasness also helped with the event.
