Permanent Fish Houses off Ice

Permanent fish houses have to be off of Lake of the Woods by March 31st, meaning, no fish houses can be left out unattended overnight.  Some areas of the lake experienced some increased melting and water flow due to an unseasonably warm early March.  Those areas are typically bays and areas on the river. The areas that enjoyed decent ice up to the end were the areas that have access to the main lake.  Some resorts are still allowing ATV access and portable shelters.  The access opportunities this time of year are day to day.  The fishing can be wonderful, but as always, safety first.

For the next month, most angler’s attention will be focused on the Rainy River where boats have been catching walleyes and sturgeon.  The walleye season continues until April 14th and the sturgeon fishing season continues until May 16th. Pike are open year round and will start being fished when the bays open up.
