The lake locked up with ice but still a few open spots.  Some local guides have ventured out finding varying ice conditions.  So far, a bit of rough ice near shore but not bad.  Water clarity appears good with fish being caught by guides testing.  Resorts will be out measuring ice thickness and assessing ice conditions during the week.  Safety is #1.  The Rainy River has a skim of ice across it with only a few open areas left. Back bays are frozen over with 4 to 8 inches in many areas.  Water temperature remains 32.2 degrees Fahrenheit.

On an average year, resort fish houses get out on the main lake around Dec 10th and stay on the ice through March 31st.  ATV’s and collapsible fish houses will get out a bit earlier based on when resorts who maintain ice roads feel it is safe.  When resorts open ice roads, stay on marked trails and don’t deviate for safety.  Walleyes and saugers are staged up nicely along south shore with fish populations favorable.

NW Angle is frozen in most areas with a few areas with current still remaining open. Resorts are checking ice conditions, starting to mark initial trails.  Not ready yet.  Safety first.  Follow daily reports at Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page.  A complete list of lodging, ice fishing packages and sleeper houses are available at www.LakeoftheWoodsMN.com/Lodging.
