Your Guide to ShiverFest 2020 Weekend February 21st – 23rd, 2020
With Devils Lake being North Dakota’s largest natural body of water reaching over 3,000 square miles becoming an ice fishing wonderland each Winter, it comes as no surprise that the town of Devils Lake hosts an annual winter celebration each year called ShiverFest. Running from February 21st to 23rd, 2020, ShiverFest is a fun weekend for the community and visitors to celebrate winter and all the activities the town has to offer.
With so many activities happening around Devils Lake during ShiverFest weekend 2020 you’ll want to plan accordingly to make sure you catch everything. Below is a guided itinerary to planning out your weekend or you can make your own itinerary by viewing the entire list of events here.
Plan to start out ShiverFest weekend by heading to Downtown Devils Lake for the Frosty Quilt Show. This self-guided walking tour throughout downtown businesses is the perfect chance to check out some amazing craftsmanship and is also a great chance to do some shopping in our local downtown businesses. You can even hit up one of our downtown restaurants for lunch or dinner. The Quilt show runs all day Friday and Saturday- visit their event page for more details.
9:00am- Begin your day at Creel Bay Golf Course. Starting at 9am you can rent cross country skis for free courtesy of Gerrells Sports Center or you can go sledding (bring your own sled). Skiing and sledding runs from 9am-4pm Saturday and Sunday.
10:00am- After an hour of skiing or sledding you can warm up inside the club house while checking out the Winter Wonderland Vendor Show that runs from 10am-3pm.
11:00am- Have you ever been running in the cold North Dakota Winter? Starting at 11am you can participate in the Frozen Fanny 5K hosted by Lake Region State College that ends with hot chocolate and prizes. Cost is $20/participant and sign up will be available at Lake Region State College or Lake Region Fitness. You can also register online at lrsc.edu.
12:30pm- After your run or day of sledding and skiing, wind down with Snowga starting at 12:30 hosted by Lake Region Fitness and is free to the public.
Alternate activity: If running outside isn’t your thing you can head over to White Horse Hill National Game Preserve (formerly Sully’s Hill) for free snowshoeing from 12-4pm, the trails are beautiful and challenging and the Visitor Center is also open for you to warm up and learn more about the game preserve. Visit https://www.facebook.com/friendsofsullyshill/ for more details.
TIP: Timing gets a little tight between the next activities, if you have a spouse or other family members that can get your family over before Snowga it might make fitting everything in easier and less stressful.
After you are done with the activities at Creel Bay Golf Course, it’s time to head across the lake to Woodland Resort (literally you can drive there on the lake) or you can stick to the roads of course.
If you haven’t had lunch yet, Proz Lakeside at the Cove located inside Woodland Report is a great option for the whole family.
1:00pm- Take your little ones to the Youth Ice Fishing Tournament that runs from 1pm-2:30. $10 entry fee and kids receive a free rod & reel combo, bait, tackle, coupons for Taco Johns, and a free t-shirt compliments of Creative Impressions. There are also prize drawings for $1500 worth of Chamber Bucks for fish payouts, plus you are entered into a drawing for an ice fishing starter kit and Clam Ice Armor donated by Newby’s Ace Hardware. Tickets available at the Chamber of Commerce, Fire Department or on the ice the day of the event.
2:30pm- After the youth ice fishing tournament head over to Proz Lakeside at the Cove fire pits on the patio for hot cocoa and s’mores. Runs from 1-3:30.
3:00pm- After warming up with hot cocoa, stick around woodland resort, they have sleigh rides running from 12-4pm and you can also ice skate or play pond hockey on one of the rinks they have cleared off (bring your own skates).
5:00pm- After all the playing in the snow and on the ice it’s time from supper! Starting at 4pm until 9pm there is a Burger and Steak fry benefit from the Devils Lake Optimist Club.
8:00pm- The perfect end to any winter celebration is Fireworks of course! Starting at 8pm you can catch the fireworks display at Woodland Resort. Bring some blankets and warm weather gear and some chairs to enjoy the show as a family.
If you didn’t get a chance to cross country ski, sled, or ice skate you still have time on Sunday from 9-4.
The best way to end ShiverFest weekend is by attending a Pancake Breakfast that supports a great organization called Fishing has No Boundaries . The feed runs from 8-2 at the KC Hall in downtown Devils Lake.
