Bite still Awesome as

Fish Slide Deeper

Electronics useful to find suspended fish!

Multiple limits still being caught daily, with plenty of trophy walleyes in the mix. Fish and fish houses shifted a bit deeper this week.  Morning bite 7-10 am and afternoons later than 2 pm still producing the most action. Pick your favorite jig, glow jigs have been hot! Tip hooks with a live shiner or minnow in 22-30 feet of water. Use a dead stick 6″ off bottom and an active jigging spoon tipped with minnow head in the other.  Electronics helpful in finding those few suspended fish.

Roads are plowed and mid sized vehicles are out! Up to 16″ of ice on the lake allows for midsize vehicles and small pickups to drive on plowed roads. Use resorts as your guides and stay on marked trails as cold weather has caused a few cracks and pressure ridges. Wheeled houses allowed out of some resort accesses.  To be safe, check with the specific resort you plan on using for up to date info.  Their first concern is safety.  They are also careful not to break up a good solid road by allowing pick ups, etc too early.

The snowmobile trail is open on the Rainy River.  Parts of the river have up to 12″ of ice. Heavy bites in 17-21 feet of water, using 3/8 oz light colored jigs like glow, pink, and white tipped with minnow.

Up at the NW Angle, fishing is awesome, with resorts now open for the season! 19-24 feet is the best bite, using pink or gold. Many reports of trophy walleyes along with a very active crappie and perch bite. Up to 15″ of ice with marked snowmobile trails.

Fish Frys in Full Gear

Fish Fry
A tradition up at Lake of the Woods are the fish frys.  Come up and experience world class fishing “just like the good old days” and celebrate after with a great meal of fresh walleyes and sauger.

Some groups use the fish cleaning houses at the resort they are staying at to clean their catch.  Others let the guides do the cleaning.

As far as the fish fry, cook your own in your cabin or have a resort cook them for you.  Many resorts will cook up your fresh catch with all the sides we have come to love with a fish fry.   Click Here for info on Resorts at Lake of the Woods.
