Big bass event a big deal for Palatka

Fishing the St. Johns River, Crescent and, especially Lake George will be a bad bet this weekend, and not only because of the 20- to 25-knot winds. The final two days of the Bassmaster Elite Series are Saturday and Sunday and those boats will be buzzing around all over the place up and down the river — along with bass fishing groupies who follow them like Tiger Woods on the 18th green.

This is like a major in golf. Seventy-five of the best bass anglers in the world will be competing. That number will be pared down to 35 fishing Saturday and only the top 10 compete for the $100,000 top prize Sunday. The weigh-ins are a hoot, especially Sunday. It’s kind of like NASCAR, but wetter. These boats do scoot, and wear paint jobs Liberace would be jealous of.
