Vinson Ounces Ahead at Bull Shoals

While today proved to me a much nicer day weather-wise at the Bassmaster Elite Series event on Arkansas’ Bull Shoals Lake, many anglers complained the fishing was tougher due to less wind. Day 1 leader Greg Vinson from Wetumpka, Alabama is one of those anglers who found today a tougher grind, but still managed to stay ahead with a limit coming in at 13 pounds and 8 ounces. Todays’ fish give him a two-day total of 30 pounds 5 ounces. His lead is not commanding. In fact it is puny. Only two ounces separate him from the angler in the second spot after Day 2, Casey Scanlon from Lenexa, Kansas. Scanlon’s 15 pounds 5 ounces of bass garnered him a two-day total of 30 pounds 3 ounces.

Reigning Bassmaster Classic Champ, Cliff Pace from Petal, Mississippi, is holding on to the third spot. Pace is only 7 ounces out of the lead.
Vinson is chasing fish.
“I can’t tell you what a grind this was today,” said Vinson. “I am happy with the weight I got. The bite was slow today for me. I’ve been chasing them the whole week. It took me a long time to figure them out.
“Each day I learn more. Hopefully I keep doing that and the fishing gets better. I caught one 4-pounder today. I have to catch at least one big bite to be able to make the final day.”
Scanlon isn’t pressuring his fish, yet.
“I haven’t leaned on ’em yet,” said Scanlon. “I had 20 or maybe 30 keepers before 10:00 this morning. I’ve hit about half of my places I’ve got. I’ve been fishing a couple of the spots each day. When I catch what I got today I leave it alone. I think I’m going to lean on them harder now and try to increase my catch by ounces to keep going.”
Pace is pleased.
“So far so good,” said Pace. “I had to totally change what I was doing today so I could get around some this afternoon. It is so important on these clear lakes to fish the current conditions and not just what you did the day before. I kind of hit the panic button around 10:00, then I made the right adjustment.”
