After years of fishing for dough, you’d think many pros would like to be fishing familiar waters where they can economize their time and not waste other resources, such as gas, attempting to learn new water.
Funny thing, many of the Bassmaster Elite Series pros who were asked by BassFIRST which event of the 2018 regular season they are most excited about fishing, many answered either a destination they’ve never fished or a body of water that B.A.S.S. usually schedules for a different time of the year. Change and challenge is good in the eyes of many pros, but of course some prefer familiarity too. Exciting times for the Bassmaster Elites for sure.

Aaron Martens
“I’m excited about fishing Lake Oahe in South Dakota,” said Martens. “Because it’s big, it reminds me of western lakes and it’s different.”
Jason Christie
“South Dakota,” said Christie. “Lake Oahe is gonna be the first lake that is truly unknown to us. No information and a lot of water.”
Hank Cherry
“I’d pick Lake Martin,” said Cherry. “Because it should be a semi-cold water event and it fishes very similar to my home lake, Lake Norman in North Carolina.”
Edwin Evers
“South Dakota,” said Evers. “I have never been to that part of the country and I’ve always wanted to see it.
“It’s a new lake to me. It should be really exciting, none of us ever being there before.”
Adrian Avena
“I would have to say Chesapeake Bay,” said Avena. “Because it’s only an hour from the house, and I grew up fishing tidal fisheries.”
Alton Jones Jr.
“I’m most excited about Lake Oahe in South Dakota,” said Jones Jr. “It’s a lake that most of the competitors know nothing about, and with the new no info rule it will be a great test of everyone’s fishing ability.”
Chris Lane
“Kentucky Lake,” said Lane. “We’re going there in May, and after all the tournaments we’ve fished there, I’ve never cashed a check. Maybe going there a lot earlier in the year will help me out.”
Alton Jones
“I’m most looking forward to the St. Lawrence River in Waddington, New York,” said Jones. “I love the way it ‘feels’, and I’ve gained a great understanding about how those smallies relate to the current. It fishes different every time we go. Last time I caught them deep, the time before it was shallow. What a fun place to go.
“A close second for me is Lake Oahe in South Dakota. I’ve never been there (or even South Dakota for that matter), so it will be a great adventure for me and Jimmy Sue.
“Also, from what I’ve read on the internet, the bass there don’t seem to get much pressure. They could be plentiful and willing, a great combination!”
Brandon Palaniuk
“For me it’s hands down the St. Lawrence River,” said Palaniuk. “I think going there in August gives a guy a legitimate shot at breaking 100 pounds of smallmouth.”
