2.29.16 Sunset Lodge Fishing Report

Up at the NW Angle, we have about 18-25 inches of ice on the Minnesota side and an average of

18 inches up on Ontario where we are fishing for crappies. We have anywhere from 10+ inches of snow to 2 foot drifts.

On the Minnesota side, the bite has been good before 9am and after 4pm, picking a few up throughout the day. We have houses at Little Oak and on the south side of Oak Island. Fishing is starting to pick up on the south side of Oak. We are fishing in the mud and sand on the south side of Oak relating to points and structure in about 22-24 feet. At Little Oak, we are fishing right on the transition from rock to hard bottom and have a few houses out in the mud at depths of 27-32 feet. When fishing deep isn’t working, 18 feet right on the rocks is producing the best. Gold, pink & white are the best on sunny days. Recommended tackle: Jiggin’ raps, rippin’ raps, Gemini, buck shots. – Jeremy Glessing, Sunset Lodge Ice Team

On the Ontario side, the slush is limiting where we can travel with a bomber.  The way crappies school, it’s been a hay day, the best year yet. The downside is that it doesn’t take long, and the size drops and the schools move. The more you search & drill, the more you’ll catch! We’ll be out scouting the next couple of days and ready for our next guided crappie trips this week. Recommended tackle: Tungsten jigs with a mustache plastic and a piece of minnow tail. – Dan Schmidt, Sunset Lodge Ice Team

Until next week, good fishing!
