This past summer NPAA member Greg Karch has promoted fishing to families and youth through events held in Wisconsin.

Walleye Weekend held in Fond du Lac Wisconsin
During Walleye Weekend family fishing tournament, Greg worked with over 200 families to do fish identification.  He used colored flash cards and had youths identify the fish.  Greg handed out prize packs that were donated and purchased on his own.  During the afternoon Greg worked with youths attending the Walleye Weekend festival where he did one-on-one casting clinics with youths.  Greg used Backyard Bass so the youth could practice accuracy and catch fish on land.

Powder Horn 2010 held in White Lake Wisconsin
Powder Horn 2010 was held for all Mid-West Boy Scout and Cub Scout leaders.  Greg presented a seminar on Fishing to 122 leaders so they would have enough information to help youths obtain the Boy Scout fishing merit badge.  Greg presented three, two hour seminars which included one hour of lecture and one hour of hands on lab.  The seminar was built from the requirements needed to obtain a merit badge for fishing.  Greg distributed DNR educational material as he is a DNR certified angler educator.  Leaders that attended the fishing seminar, thoroughly enjoyed it and believe they are now ready to work with the scouts to obtain the fishing merit badge.

Winnebago County Libraries ‘Make a Splash’ Summer Program
Greg held Youth Fishing Seminars at the following libraries; Oshkosh, Omro and Winneconne during July and August.  The seminars included a one hour presentation on ‘Fishing Basics’ followed by one hour of one-on-one casting with youths.  ‘Fishing Basics’ seminar included the following; safety, details on open and closed face fishing combo’s, casting, fishing identification, knots, bait, parts of a fish and what Greg’s tackle box consisted of when he was a youth.  Over 200 youths and parents attended these Youth Fishing Clinics.  During the Winneconne fishing seminar, Greg held a youth fishing tournament where he supplied all the equipment needed.  During these events Greg handed out sponsors donated items along with tackle packages that he funded.

Welcome Home Event for Families of Soldiers that were on a Oversea Missions held in Oshkosh
Greg will participate in a Welcome Home event for the soldiers and their families, which will be held on the EAA grounds in Oshkosh on October 2nd.  The soldiers attending this event will have been on an overseas mission within the past year.  During this event Greg will hold fishing seminars for the youth and soldiers.  Greg will also hold a fishing tournament in the EAA pond where he will supply all the needed fishing equipment.  If anyone has anything they would like to donate to this event contact Greg Karch by email or phone.

A special thank you goes out to sponsors which supplied items for the Fishing Clinics; Mercury, Maui Jim, Off-Shore Tackle, HT and Greg Karch.

Greg is always looking for opportunities to spread fishing to youths.  So if you need help or would like Greg to organize event contact him at [email protected] or 920-213-0373.
