Ranger Boats/Yamaha Outboards Pro Spencer Deutz won the Anglers Insight Marketing (AIM) event at Devil s Lake, ND on Devils Lake. Teaming up with his wife Carley, the duo boated 5 walleyes for 29.86lbs to take home the victory.

Deutzes opted to stay on the main lake and fish deep rock piles due to heavy thunderstorms and light winds.  “We had active fish up shallow in the weeds during practice however with the thunderstorms coming through the night before and light winds on tournament day, we changed plans and went deep,” said Spencer. “Devils Lake is very wind driven especially with shallow fish. Those shallow fish need the wind to keep them active and there wasn’t a ripple on the lake during launch.”

Deutzes positioned their Yamaha 250 VMax SHO powered Ranger 620FS on the edge of deep rock piles targeting fish laying in the rock to gravel transitions. “We fished aggressively with #9 Rapala Jigging Raps laying an occasional slip bobber behind the boat,” said Spencer. “It took all day to get our 5 fish over 20 inches but they were the right 5.”

“We had three good fish over 25 inches,” he said, and that made the climb into first place easier. “We had one at 9 a.m. and two more with like 20 minutes left to go in the day. The bite was good all day. Using jigs, it’s just a reaction bite. I think they see something and just grab onto it. We caught a lot but the big ones were one here and one there,” he said.

Spencer credited his Ranger620FS as a key to his success. “There were times throughout the day that both Carley and I were up in the bow of the boat targeting a certain fish on the sonar.  The spacious bow in the 620FS allowed us to efficiently fish these fish” said Spencer.

Spencer has 3 reaming events on the schedule for 2016: MWC Devils Lake, ND, MWC Cass Lake, MN and the MWC World Walleye Championship out of Green Bay, WI.
