Member Jeffrey Stanway Jr #460 along with his son, Nathan Stanway, who is a Future Pro Angler and the rest of their family, hosted a One Day Kids Fishing Contest at their family cabin in Deerwood, MN.

Sunday, May 25th was a beautiful, sunny morning as Jeff and his family prepared for the children who were fishing the chain of lakes from sunrise to 3pm.  It was wonderful to see all the families out and about on the lakes fishing all day!

Jeff spent the afternoon helping all the children register and then measure and release their catch for the day.  It was a great opportunity to talk one and one with all the children and their parents about fishing and education on the lakes.  Each child could enter their longest fish in each category of 6 species, Northern, Walleye, Perch, Bass, Sunfish and Crappie.  Overall, there we 58 children at our event that registered 88 fish.  I would say that is a successful event.

At 3:30 all the children and their family gathered as Jeff talked about NPAA and the AIS message of “Clean, Drain and Dry”.  Nathan showed off his Future Pro Angler shirt and we talked about the NPAA fishing clinics available for children.

Each child went home a bag full of educational information, including information on invasive water species. Thanks to the NPAA, Jeff was able to hand out 25 NPAA water bottles and 20 rod combos.  The children also went home with many great prizes and fishing related items such as lures, shirts, hats that were donated to use by sponsors.

The children were so excited!  We also gave out ribbons and trophies for 1st- 5th place for all species. Our goal is to continue to help grow the sport of fishing.  Jeff’s family, along with their Lake Association also promote a year long contest to get the children excited in fishing all year long.

Jeff would like to thank everyone who volunteered to help at the event and donate items:  NPAA- The National Professional Anglers Association, along with Member Greg Karch #138 for all of his help this year.  Also Skeeter Boats, Outdoor News, Fleet Farm, Bett’s Tackle, Garrison Sports, Grand Casino Mille Lacs, Reeds Sporting Goods, Tutt’s Bait and Tackle, McDonalds of Garrison, SuperValu of Garrison, Jack’s House Bowling, Magic Products, Mister Twister, Paul Bunyan Land, Rapid River Lodge & Water park, Southern Pro Tackle, Yamaha Motors, Reef Runner , JB Lures, Hale Lures, Ranger Boats, Gapen’s Tackle Company and Tackle 2000, Inc
