Ice fishing is on fire right now. Varying ice conditions all over the lake so please go through a resort and use the ice roads as they are checked daily. Water clarity is good. Trails are staked by resorts. Ice is stacked up in most areas so drilling and finding a spot where you can get an auger through is a must. Auger extension could be necessary in spots. Each lake access is different right now so please call ahead to the resort you plan on going out of to check ice report and whats being let out. Walleyes and saugers are snapping at anything with a shiner on it. Sorting through smaller fish is necessary to find keepers. Some big fish rolling around out there. Depending on the school some schools are aggressive while others need finessing up the hole.  Colors did not seem to be a large factor. Pike action in back bays continues to be hot.

On the Rainy River, ice stretches from shore to shore but is unsafe for travel and fishing at this time. Safety First.

NW Angle is frozen over with good ice in most spots but some weak areas in some known locations. ATV and snowmobile travel on designated marked trails. Resorts are checking ice conditions, marking trails, and placing houses. 10-15″ of ice where resorts fish and fishing is electric.  Follow daily reports at Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page and local resort pages.  A complete list of lodging, ice fishing packages and sleeper houses are available at www.LakeoftheWoodsMN.com/Lodging.
