On April 11, 2015  at the local Pope County, MN Expo Nancy Koep #323 put on a “Future Angler” fishing clinic called ‘Fishing 101’ the basic’s for kids. Nancy covered a lot of information in a short amount of time.  With 32 kids attending the seminar she had her hands full.

During the session, Nancy talked about boat safety, things to bring with when you are fishing, Invasive Species, knot tying and using the right tackle to target the fish you are targeting while on the water. In front of the room, Nancy had a huge aquarium set up with water, where she demonstrated how to set you bobber when fishing with a slip bobber. She also explained to the kids, how to tell if your bobber had too much weight on it, or if they were on the bottom and needed to reset the bobber.

“I like to be able to show them, ‘hands on’, how to do things, it makes itm easier for kids to understand”, said Koep.  In the aquarium she also demonstrated a few different lures so the kids could see what it looks like from a fish’s view.  “The kids always like the top water lures for bass that I put in there, and they can’t believe that they float.”

Nancy wrapped up the clinic by showing the kid’s how to use the rod/reel combos each would receive following the clinic.  She taught them  how to cast, how to set the drag, and how to remove the top to put new line on.

Special Thanks to the NPAA, Koep’s, Sea Grant, Fish Addictions, and Wing It tackle.
