Future Anglers Learn How To Cast At Kimberly’s YMCA Healthy Kids Day

On Saturday, May 7th, Certified Angler Educator Greg Karch with Learn 2 Fish With Us and NPAA Member #138, Karen Karch #121, instructed youth on the skills needed when casting during Kimberly’s YMCA Healthy Kids Day held in Kimberly, Wisconsin.  Lake Shakespeare was setup which consisted of a thirty by forty blue tarp which represented water and it was stocked with thirty-five Backyard Bass.   Greg instructed the youth on casting by utilizing the following steps.  First, point the rod in the direction to cast, next look behind you, then utilizing the ten o’clock two o’clock approach for casting.  Bring the rod tip over your shoulder to ten o’clock position and then proceed forward to two o’clock when you release the button on a spin cast combo.  The youth were eager to learn and after a couple cast, they were catching Backyard Bass!!!  They were so

excited when they would reel in a Backyard Bass, they would say they are so heavy.  The youth received many goodies from Tru Turn Hooks, fish Identification cards, Shakespeare casting plugs and hats.

Learn 2 Fish With Us also had a fishing education station where the kids could check out the different live and Berkley artificial bait. The kids had the opportunity to touch the live bait which consisted of different types of minnows, leeches and worms.  When the kids checked out the Berkley artificial bait they said it looked like a minnow, leech or worm, but when they went and smelled the bait, they said it smelled like the live bait!!!  The kids got to tie a Clinch and Palomar knots, identify fish and learn more about the AIS message of ‘Clean Drain Dry’.  Parents even said they learn a thing or two in the educational booth!!!
