A state-wide fishing tournament this winter is offering some $40,000 in sponsored cash and prizes, not including the general cash payout and Lunker Pool.

The fifth annual NYS Winter Classic Fishing Tournament, which last year attracted more than 750 anglers, began Jan. 1 and ends Feb. 28.

Anglers can enter fish caught on all state freshwater bodies of water (ice, open water, lakes, rivers and streams, ponds, tributaries, etc.). They can fish from shore, on the ice or in a boat.

The contest includes prizes for seven main categories of fish: trout (browns, lakers, steelhead/rainbows); northern pike; walleye; pickerel; crappie; yellow perch and panfish (sunfish, bluegill), plus an overall award for the largest burbot caught.
