FINLAYSON, MN (July 14, 2025) – With forward-facing sonar (FFS) becoming commonplace on the hardwater, anglers are looking for ice fishing jigs with peak sonar visibility. Where to start? Tungsten, which is 1.7 times the density of lead and provides better sonar returns. Enter the new Mad Scientist Octo Madness tungsten ice fishing jig with its multifaceted, eight-sided head, each face amplifying sonar returns for crystal clear viewing of your bait on standard sonar or FFS. |

“Some of the first experiments Mad Scientist Tackle conducted were under the ice,” said Mad Scientist Tackle Sales Director, Patrick Kalmerton. “With pro staffers like the Crappies Chronicles crew, we received a lot of feedback about exactly what profiles, shapes, colors, and sizes catch the most fish. So, we originally introduced the Bullfrog and Larva Bug, both lead ice jigs, based on that input. And when you want a little more nuance, subtlety, and slower rate of fall, lead can be perfect. But we knew he had to expand our line with tungsten jigs that fall to fish fast and show up bright on sonar. And now we have the new Octo Madness and Cyclops Jigs.” Kalmerton continued: “The Octo Madness tungsten jig is special in how well it reflects standard sonar and FFS. With eight flat faces on the jig head, it’s like a mirror ball to the fish, while at the same time yielding high visibility on sonar.” |

Speaking of what fish see underwater – this “mirror ball effect” – there are no other ice fishing jigs on the market with the UV potency Mad Scientist Tackle APEX Vision coatings provide.
“It’s dark down there, under the ice,” said Kalmerton. “And fish still feed off of visual cues, so having that extra sauce from APEX Vision in stained water, under a foot of snow, or in the middle of the night is really something that can turn average fishing into something spectacular.”
Kalmerton concluded: “The last thing I’ll say, is that these jigs were designed in sizes that will catch everything from bluegills to crappies to perch to finesse-oriented walleyes. I’ve been on walleye bites where your classic spoons and a minnow head gets scoffed at by skittish fish. But put down an Octo Madness tungsten Jig with a tiny fathead pinned behind the dorsal…and they get slurped up.”
The Octo Madness tungsten ice fishing jig is available in 5- and 6mm sizes for and six different APEX Vision coatings starting with either a black or pearl base – colors including Red, Blue, Green, Gold, Pink, and Natural, each producing the highest visibility possible in the visible, UV, and infrared light spectrums, which is especially valuable in the dark waters below snow and sometimes feet of ice.

About APEX Vision Colors: Made For the Way Fish See All Mad Scientist Tackle baits start off as either nude, pearl, or black base lures that are then customized through a multistage process whereby they end up in an APEX Vision coating, which radiate color in the visible, UV, and infrared spectrums, mimicking real baitfish scales and making it highly visible to predatory fish. Available colors include Red, Blue, Green, Gold, Pink, and Natural. The novel coatings were developed to appeal to the way fish see, creating flashing iridescent colors in visible, UV, and infrared spectrums that attract fish from farther than ever. Here are recommendations for when to use each APEX Vision color: |
|

APEX +RED: Proven to entice reaction bites, Apex +RED imitates bleeding baitfish so perfectly that predatory fish can’t resist. It’s also the best choice for fishing in the green, algae blooms of late summer.

APEX +BLUE: In stained to dark water, APEX +BLUE outperforms other colors. Thanks to the iridescent flash of the lure, fish see it in stained to murky water conditions with low light.

APEX +GREEN: One of the best colors on any body of water, APEX +GREEN resembles young-of-the-year and other baitfish. It works best in spring and summer in clear and stained water.

APEX +GOLD: Gold is a standard in every angler’s arsenal, but APEX +GOLD has brought fishing to a whole new level. It resembles a school of baitfish/minnows and is a great choice year ‘round in any water color.

APEX +PINK: One of the most popular colors to attract predator fish from a distance. It works well in clear and stained water conditions.

|
APEX +NATURAL: Resembles crayfish and gives off a more natural presentation, especially when fishing near rocks. It performs well in clear and stained water. |
