What was supposed to be a peaceful day on the water turned into a story of unexpected heroism for Bob Gist, Brad Carlisle, and their guide, Jordan Chrestman. Their fishing trip to Grenada Lake, Mississippi — famous for its abundant black crappie — would be remembered not for the fish they caught, but for the 38 lives they saved.

A shocking discovery in open water

Shortly after setting out, about two kilometers from shore, the trio noticed something strange bobbing in the distance. As they drew closer, they were stunned: dozens of hunting dogs, exhausted and disoriented, were paddling aimlessly in the vast expanse of the lake.

The dogs wore bright collars and tracking devices, clear signs they were part of an organized hunt. But out here, adrift and struggling, they were completely out of their element. “You could tell they were lost,” Bob recalled. “Their heads were barely above water — they couldn’t see the shoreline.”

A race against time

Wasting no time, Bob, Brad, and Jordan turned their boat toward the struggling animals. It quickly became clear that rescuing them wouldn’t be easy. The dogs were scattered, swimming in every direction, panic setting in.

In just under an hour, they completed a rescue mission that could easily have ended in tragedy. Without their intervention, it’s likely many of the dogs would have succumbed to exhaustion.

How the dogs ended up in danger

The stranded dogs were participating in a Fox Run, a traditional hunting event where dogs track foxes. But that day, the chase went wrong. A deer bolted into the lake, and the dogs, driven by instinct, followed it deep into open water — far beyond their bearings.

The hunters, stuck on shore without boats, could only watch helplessly. Their gratitude was immeasurable when they learned that three strangers had brought their dogs safely home.

Thanks to their courageous efforts, all 38 dogs survived without serious injury. News of the rescue quickly spread, turning what began as a simple fishing trip into a heartwarming tale of humanity.
