With only one event left in the season, the University of North Alabama is dominating the Cabela’s School of the Year point’s race with a commanding lead over the rest of the field.

After finishing second in the points race last year, the team changed their strategy in their effort to win the title of School of the Year. Previous president of the University of North Alabama Bass Team and recent graduate, Robb Young stated that “getting second was bittersweet. We were happy to have gotten that far, but really wanted to win. This year we changed our strategy in the way we sent teams to tournaments

The UNA Bass Team has competed in twelve events so far this season to give them a solid 74 point lead over previous Cabela’s School of the Year champions, the University of Louisiana Monroe. UNA has had to fight for their lead as ULM did not let up on the competition.

Young stated that “it’s been really close this year. When ULM took the lead mid-season, it just fueled us into high gear to get that number one spot back.”

Only one event stands in the team’s way from a much sought after SOY victory and that event happens to be the B.A.S.S. Wildcard event on their home lake – Lake Pickwick. The UNA team is sending a total of six boats to the event with hopes of having at least two of their teams in the top ten.

“[Our team] is really close, almost like a fraternity and Pickwick is our home lake. Our strategy is to share information between our six teams and win the Wildcard and of course the title of School of the Year,” Young said.

The Wildcard weigh in will be held on the campus of University of North Alabama to give the UNA team yet another incentive to finish the season with a win.

“We’re having the weigh-in on campus so it definitely makes us want to do that much better in front of our family and friends,” Young explained. “It’s an awesome way for us to end the season and we are very humbled as a team to have this experience.”
