Rookie Martin Takes Early Lead of FLW on Big O

Yep, a fella with the last name of Martin is leading after Day 1 of the FLW Tour opener on Lake Okeechobee with a 5-fish limit weighing 26-pounds and 12-ounces, but it isn’t who you think it would be. It’s not Roland or Scott. Nope, it’s Casey Martin from New Market, Alabama. This is his first Tour level event as a pro.

“I couldn’t believe the way my day started,” said Martin. “My first cast as a pro, I hook and catch a 6.5-pounder! It took forever getting the fish in. I was walking around the boat waiting to net it. I was thinking about flipping it in, but I didn’t want to risk breaking my rod.

“I then went on to catch my limit and then decided to move around and look for other spots to fish. I have no grand illusions about winning this event. I know I need more than just the one or two spots I found in practice.”

Martin used a combination of flipping earlier in the day and then he ended up junk fishing throwing a swim jig and a chatterbait. However, Casey didn’t participate in any sight fishing today.

“I know some guys were sight fishing, but not me,” said Martin. “I’ve been flipping primarily, but today I went junk fishing after I had my limit. I felt pretty good with about 12 pounds or so, and then went searching for more spots. I came up on an area and it felt like I should use a swim jig there. I never threw it in practice. It worked well and so did a Z-Man chatterbait.”

Martin is satisfied with his day.

“I told my co-angler today that if don’t catch a fish tomorrow, I’d be happy being able to say I lead an FLW Tour event for a day. Not that many people can say they ever did that.”
