The Rayovac FLW Series is headed to Clear Lake Oct. 9-11 for a tournament presented by Evinrude when as many as 300 pros and co-anglers will take to the water for the final stop of 2014 in the Western Division.

“There will be multiple patterns in play during this tournament,” said Walmart FLW Tour pro Mark Daniels Jr., of Fairfield, California, who has six top-10 finishes in FLW competition. “There will certainly be a shallow-water bite, but you can count on some anglers coming in with big stringers caught out deeper than 18 feet as well. Fall always presents multiple patterns.

“The lake is about 8 feet lower than usual right now,” Daniels continued. “I’ve never seen it that low in my life. That will take the creeks out of the game, and it will make the lake fish much smaller. Clear Lake is weird, though, because you can still win the tournament fishing in a crowd. It’s similar to Lake Okeechobee – sometimes if you aren’t in a crowd on Clear Lake, you aren’t catching them. A particular cast or angle can make a big difference.”

Daniels said that popular baits for anglers looking to fish shallow would be buzzbaits, swimbaits, frogs and toads. Anglers opting to fish deep will be throwing swimbaits, deep-diving crankbaits and football jigs.

“The docks are always a player,” Daniels said. “You can pull a good stringer from them, but anglers fishing just the docks don’t seem to win. Jody Jordan won this event last year fishing deep and offshore, and you should never count out that offshore dynamic.

“I think the winning angler will weigh in 67 to 69 pounds over the course of the three-day tournament.”

Anglers will take off from the Fifth Street Launch Ramp located on Fifth Street in Lakeport, California, at 7:30 a.m. each day. Weigh-ins will be held daily at the landing beginning at 3:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

Pros will fish for a top award of $40,000 plus a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup guidelines are met. Co-anglers will cast for a top award consisting of a Ranger Z117 with 90-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $5,000 if Ranger Cup guidelines are met.

The Rayovac FLW Series consists of five divisions – Central, Northern, Southeast, Texas and Western. Each division consists of three tournaments and competitors will be vying for valuable points in each division that could earn them the opportunity to fish in the Rayovac FLW Series Championship. The 2014 Rayovac FLW Series Championship is being held Oct. 30-Nov. 1 on Wheeler Lake in Rogersville, Alabama.
