Get your tackle bags out and your credit cards ready to restock for the spring season. Bass anglers all over the USA and Canada can’t wait for winter to depart.

Fortunately, one of the top pros on the Bassmaster Elite Series, Nitro/Berkley pro Ott DeFoe took a little time out of his Bassmaster Classic preparation to share his Top 3 techniques and what lures we need to pick up for late winter/early spring bass fishing.

Shallow cranking.

“I’ve caught so many bass in the spring on a crankbait,” said DeFoe. “Especially a Shad Rap. Fishing along shallow cover and casting a crankbait is a great way to cover a lot of water and find fish. There is also the potential to catch some big ones.”

Suspending jerkbait.

“The suspending jerkbait isn’t as effective at covering water as a crankbait,” said DeFoe. “But it is a great alternative to cranking. They will often catch bass that won’t chase a crankbait down or when the water is clearer with better visibility. It is a great lure that triggers a bass’s curiosity.

“My go-to jerkbait is the Shadow Rap.”

Jigging.

“The jig is so versatile,” said DeFoe. “You can work it deep around any type of cover. You can fish it shallow flipping docks, wood, rocks. I use the Terminator Pro Series Jig with a Berkley Chigger Chunk on the back.

“The jig is probably the best way to target larger fish day in and day out. However, you can also downsize the jig to pick up a few more bites, too. It’s very versatile.”
