Mike Iaconelli Slams 20-3 for ‘Magical’ Oneida Lake Lead

It’s been a long mediocre 2012 Bassmaster Elite Series season for Mike Iaconelli, the 2003 Bassmaster Classic winner and the 2006 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year.

On one of the most tenseful weeks of the year for a Bassmaster Elite Series pro, Mike Iaconelli brought 20 pounds, 3 ounces to the scales on Day One of the Ramada Championship.
“Magic” was the word Ike described throughout his media interviews as he goes into Friday with a near four pound lead over Angler of the Year leader Brent Chapman who sits in second with 16-12.
“It was one of those magic days, when everything fell into place,” Iaconelli said on stage as he weighed the day’s largest bass, a 5-5 largemouth.
Iaconelli said his magic day gave him solid hopes for making the 2013 Bassmaster Classic.
“I’ve had a lot of things going through my mind over our three days of practice, and even as I launched this morning. At the top of that list is being on the bubble for the Classic. I’ve had one of those years that was riddled with mediocre finishes, and I can’t put my finger on why,” he said.
In 31st place in the AOY standings coming into the eigth and final event, Iaconelli knows that with a strong start and finish he’ll continue his streak of Classic appearances.
Brent Chapman left this morning with a 13-point lead over 2011 Bassmaster Elite Series Rookie of the Year Ott DeFoe, by the end of the day one, Chapman unofficially holds a 40-point lead over Texan Todd Faircloth. DeFoe fell to sixth after his 59th place after day one.
