Who among you doesn’t dig their boat? Or perhaps fantasize about owning a boat and what cool stuff you’d have on/in it? Well, boats are a big part of bass fishing, especially when you fish bodies of water large enough to merit their use.

Quaker State pro Jimmy Houston has been fishing national level tournaments for 50 seasons now. For all of those 50 years, he’s been in a boat chasing those bassy little buggers. So, why not ask a dude who has made a career in a boat what his favorite boat gear happens to be. That’s just what I did.

Jimmy’s boat.

“I’d have to say my favorite gear associated with my boat is the boat itself,” said Houston. “Whether it’s my Ranger fiberglass boat or my aluminum Tracker, they are state-of-the-art.

“I’ve been running a Ranger since 1968. I don’t remember how many I’ve had over the years. In fact I ran the first one sold in Oklahoma. I’ve been using Trackers for a long time as well, generally using them in smaller waters where it’s tougher to access with a bigger boat. I love both of them. It’s amazing how they improve year after year.

“Some days I just feel like pinching myself when I look around and see how these machines have evolved. Amazing.”

Trolling motor.

“As far as some of my favorite gear on a boat, it’s tough to beat my trolling motor,” said Houston. “It is pretty tough to fish effectively throughout the year with them.

“I use a Minn Kota. I love it. I work it hard all day for hours on end. They are amazing. I remember years ago we’d have to bring a spare trolling motor along due to chance of failure. Now I just keep rods in my rod box. They are such a vital tool to be able to fish effectively.”

Electronics.

“I think the electronics available now are amazing,” said Houston. “I use Raymarine products. I have five units in my boat. I have the Dragonfly on my trolling motor. I like it because of the DownVision feature it offers.

“The products offered today are far superior compared to the units just a few years back. I don’t know where the technology is gonna end, but I’m excited to see where it goes.”
