I caught her on my St.Croix Legend gold pan fish rod and a Clam The
Drop Epoxy jig tipped with a wax worm. Look up that jig! I caught 13
different species of fish on it this season. I knew it was a big fish
when it came up off the bottom with a solid red mark an inch and a half
wide on my Humminbird Ice 55. It hit with a solid thunk and the fight was on. I wasn’t sure what I’d hooked and didn’t see the fish for
probably 2 min. When you get a monster fish on a light action rod it’s
important not to try to fight the fish with the rod. Point the tip down
the hole and put the fish on the drag. If you get lucky enough to have
this happen you’d better have heavy line and leader material (yellow
Power Pro 15# braid and and 10 foot 17# fluorocarbon leader) and your
drag had better be set correctly. If not it’ll end up just another “one
that got away” story. It took me probably another three minutes fighting
this fish under the hole with it making 5 or 6 foot runs back and
forth. To ensure it didn’t run the line on the ice I even stuck ¾ of
the pole under the water a few times during the fight. Once I got her
head turned she came up nice and easy.

I never intended to keep this fish. I spent a good ten min trying to
revive her but she wouldn’t go. It’s not nearly my biggest walleye (I
released a 31 inch fish that I caught in my kayak a couple years back)
but it’s plenty big enough for the wall. Now I just have to figure out
how to make some extra money to pay the taxidermist because this one is a
bit too big to “store” in my freezer. It’s also just too big for me to
put a fillet knife to regardless of the fact that I intended to release
it.

Brian W.

Chequamegon Bay Fishing Fanatics Brian Worrall with a nice lake Superior walleye. Read the story here!
